Walls - The Basics

Ideal offers a variety of wall products. Some, such as Pisa2, Roman Pisa, Stonewall, Stonewall Tumbled and GravityStone, are designed solely as retaining walls. They are known as “segmental retaining wall” (SRW) products that connect together with pins or tongue & groove which create a batter that step the block back with each course. Segmental walls work on the principal of gravity up to 4’ high. There are restrictions beyond this height or with certain conditions which we have noted below.
We also have styles that serve as garden walls and free-standing double sided walls. Olde Boston WallStone & Ancestral WallStone can be used for a wide variety of applications such as garden walls, free-standing double sided walls, seat walls, planter walls, barbecue islands, pillars and columns.
We have put together the following chart to serve as a guide as to what style is best suited for the common applications.

A Word of Caution! Our walls are easy to assemble and, properly built, they will provide years of lasting beauty. There are conditions, however, you need to be aware of because they affect the performance and stability. This is true for any type of segmental wall – not just the type Ideal makes.
Here is the deal. Depending on their size, weight and connection, the units work up to certain heights as noted in the chart above. Over those heights they require special consideration and construction techniques, including the use of geogrid. This is also true when a wall is terraced, or with sites that have weak soils, slopes behind and in front of the wall, or surcharges. For these situations, we recommend you use a qualified soils engineer and professional contractor familiar with wall construction.
Remember, our role is to provide general information on wall construction. It is the user’s responsibility to determine the suitability of the product and applicability of it to the conditions of the site.
So always play it safe and don’t forget to check with your local building department for code requirements.
